| Pipelines - Safety |
Safety is our first priority ! We take pride in our efforts to ensure the safety of the public and the environment. Our pipeline system utilizes sophisticated electronic equipment to continuously monitor and control the pipelines. Well trained Operators are on duty around the clock to operate the pipelines and monitor safety parameters. Pump stations and delivery terminals are protected with monitoring systems that automatically shut down the facilities if protective limits are exceeded.
The buried pipelines are protected against both external and internal corrosions, which would otherwise be a major threat. Special coatings are applied to all buried pipe as primary protection against external corrosion. "Cathodic Protection" is also applied to minimize external corrosion if the coating is damaged. Chemical corrosion inhibitors are used to minimize corrosion within the pipelines. Periodically, internal inspection devices called "smart pigs" are run through the pipelines to evaluate their condition. These devices can pinpoint potential problems, thereby permitting maintenance crews to dig and repair the pipeline with minimal disturbance of the right-of-way.
We at Plantation recognize the sensitive nature of our environment and are committed to its protection. A significant improvement in minimizing damage to pipelines has been the establishment of "One Call Centers" in every state in which we operate. In most states, all persons are required by law to telephone the One Call Center prior to digging near the pipeline right-of-way. This has reduced the incidence of damage and spills caused by excavating equipment striking the pipeline, which has been the most frequent cause of pipeline spills.

We also focus our attention on the pipeline right-of-way. This corridor is kept clear of high plant growth, structures, and overhanging limbs to enable aerial surveillance to be effective. The pipeline is patrolled by airplane to report any encroachment, hazardous activity, or unauthorized use of the right-of-way. Once alerted, Plantation personnel respond quickly to correct the situation.
